Editorial Reviews
From the Manufacturer
The CowboyStudio 2275 Watt Digital Video Continuous Softbox Lighting Kit/Boom Set is used in the studio to provide any form of lighting above the subject. This product is particularly effective as a hair light or back light, which breaks up the subject from the background.
One of the main questions are customers ask us is “what is the difference between continuous and strobe lighting?” Continuous lighting uses a constant light source to light your subject, meaning that your lights will stay on during the entirety of your photo shoot. Continuous lighting is recommended for beginners. Strobe lighting uses a flash of light at the moment your camera shutter opens to illuminate your subject. Many professionals use this type of lighting because it offers more control of the light.

Very Nice Lights!
When i saw the price i wasn't sure if this set is as good as $1200 ones... but because of my budget i decided to give it a try anyway. Is set is perfect! very good quality, i actually expected to see something like "a baby toy made in china that would break in a day" :) but i was totally wrong! it feels solid, materials seem to be good quality and it is simply very good light. the lights produce very even beautiful diffused white light - actually the very first day i took couple test pictures and i couldn't believe that my non professional camera actually can take very professional pictures! quality of the pictures are UNBELIEVABLE! if you have no lights like this there's no way you can light up your subject or object to make it look perfect. seriously, i saw VERY notable difference. Now i cannot live without this set - whatever picture i take at home - i use this set. I love the thought that these lights have 5 switches for each lamp so you can adjust the amount of light - PERFECT!
I originally bought this set for my green screen (home) production and it looked really really good. but now as i already said before i use these lights for everything else - Photo, Video, i even use this set to light myself when i have webcam conferences at work and everyone amazed how great i look (duh! LOL) they have no idea i use this set. anyway, i totally love it. Also, i had to contact the seller with a question i had so i emailed (i thought calling them would be difficult) but the guys responded back shortly after and asked me to call them so they can explain details since it would be easier to explain over the phone rather than by using email, i was actually pleased by their response and timing! they sound like very great guys to deal with. thanks for that as well.

Not what I ordered, but I like it so far.
I ordered this set on 3/11/10 and received it on 3/17/10. Upon opening the packaging, I noticed two things. First, there isn't any documentation at all with the kit. There's no directions, no instructions, not even an invoice. Second, I noticed that the two softboxes that I received were not 20 x 24" rectangles, as I ordered, but instead I received two 23" octagon softboxes. Initially I was very disappointed and contacted cowboystudios directly. They informed me that I had to fill out a form on the website and someone would get back to me by the day's end. I did receive a response from them after filling out the form, but the response only said that my email was being forwarded to their support staff. I haven't heard anything since then, and it's been about 2 days. After my initial frustration I decided to see what the octagon box would look like put together, so I put it all together and found that I like the look of it. The only downfall of this type of box is that there's no baffle between the lights and the cover. I don't know which of these types of boxes is more expensive, but I've decided that I'll keep the lights I have, and if they're less expensive than the rectangle boxes, I'll ask for a refund of the difference.
The moral of my story is for everyone to be careful when ordering anything from cowboystudio. I've read other reviews from people who receive products with bad sewing, and even with the boxes I received, you can see where the threading is loose and light sneaks through. Just be careful. Cowboystudio has some of the cheapest lighting on the market for a reason. It will work (most of the time) as a starter kit, but don't plan on it lasting for a long time.
