Simply plug in the hdmi input sources into the input connections and the output connection to your TV or projector. 501BN will automatically switch to the currently active input source if there is only one active input. If there are multiple active inputs, then you can select the input either using the IR remote or using the select button on the switch. The HDMI signal from the selected input is passed through to the output HDMI connection.

THIS THING WORKS!
Out of dozens of products I have bought unseen online, I have only felt convicted enough to leave a really positive review on about 4-5 occasions. I am pleased to be able to say this thing works. I have had it over a month, use it every night for hours, switching between 5 different DVR's I have and it works perfectly. The remote feature is flawless and this unit does everything it says it does. You do not have to only have one hdmi device on at a time for it to successfully switch to another input. I can have all five dvr's powered on (all hooked up to this switch via hdmi) and then switch between them. When I am watching direct tv or cox cable, when I turn on one of my three Panasonic dvr's this hdmi switch automatically switches to the newly turned on dvr. I love this switch. I give it an A+!

More HDMI inputs at an excellent value
I was a mess of wires and connections, trying to connect a TV, a DVR, a DVD player, a game system and an aging home theater receiver. Opposed to the maxed-out credit card solution where you buy all new equipment and then spend the next two years suffering buyer's remorse, I researched a more affordable answer: the 501BN Premium 5-port High speed HDMI switch with IR wireless remote.
Coupled with the Mediabridge Ultra Series - High Speed HDMI Cable With Ethernet, we connected our family Christmas present, the Xbox 360 Console and resolved other connection problems so that we could watch all inputs at either 1080p or 1080i.
We are years away from upgrading our TV or home theater system, so the 501BN provides excellent value. The unit comes with an IR remote control but the 501BN will automatically switch to the currently active input source if there is only one active input. I have not had to use the remote control yet.

Excellent Customer Service
I purchased this item and two HDMI cables from Blue Rigger to hook up my new Toshiba DVD-Recorder (purchased from Amazon) to my HD TV. I thought it would be very simple - plug the HDMI from the TV into Output and the DVR and CATV Box HDMI cables into Input and everything would work great and it was that simple except I couldn't get the DVR to record any TV shows. I was stumped as to what to do next.
I contacted Blue Rigger via email and explained that I had a technical problem that was too complex to email and they very kindly furnished me with a telephone number. The gentleman was extremely patient while I explained the problem and the connections I had. He then responded by email with three options for hook-up referencing pages in my Toshiba Owner's Manual which was exceptional customer service, in my opinion. I had looked at the owner's manual and its schematics were more confusing then helpful so the email from Blue Rigger was essential in deciphering and listing my options. The final result was so simple - hook a RCA (red, yellow, white) connector from the back of the DVR to the CATV box - everything else stayed the same. So if you are hooking up this type of system I hope I have saved you much confusion and angst! IT's THAT SIMPLE! And now I can record all channels and HD channels. Love Blue Rigger - thank you!
BTW, the switcher switches seamlessly and automatically between TV and DVD/R - I never have to use the remote.
